Alley Cat Allies has taken a stand against proposed amendments to Hawai‘i’s Administrative Rule that would ban feeding domestic animals on Department of Land and Natural Resources lands and shift focus toward lethal control of community cats. The organization argues the changes would exceed state law, undermine trap-neuter-return (TNR) programs, and fail to address the real drivers of wildlife decline.

In August, the group testified in opposition to the amendments, stating that the goal of protecting native wildlife is misguided because human activity and development are the primary causes of species decline.

Meanwhile, the organization’s TNR work in Atlantic County has helped nearly 7,000 cats and kittens. Partnering with the Humane Society of Atlantic County, the program has eliminated euthanasia at the shelter, reduced incoming litters, and increased placement of adult cats. Two kittens, Coconut and Wave, illustrate the program’s success: their mother was spayed, vaccinated, eartipped, and returned outdoors, and the kittens stayed with her until ready for adoption.

Alley Cat Allies continues to support humane treatment of cats while protecting Hawai‘i’s endangered wildlife.
