Calico cat

Lillian Rose, a calico cat rescued from the streets of San Bernardino, arrived at Furry Friends LA in a state of severe malnutrition, dehydration, and painful stomatitis that made eating difficult.

Veterinary exams confirmed the cat had severe stomatitis, an inflammatory mouth condition that can cause drooling, chewing pain, loss of appetite, and weight loss. Gene from Furry Friends LA suggested the condition may have started after a Calicivirus infection in the cat’s youth.

Instead of extracting all of Lillian Rose’s teeth, the veterinarian recommended a medication described as equivalent to GingiPro. The treatment reduced the inflammation so much that the rescue team avoided full-mouth extraction.

To keep costs manageable, Furry Friends LA arranged for the cat’s care to be performed in Mexico, where treatment is cheaper and allows the organization to help more cats with limited funding.

The rescue organization’s work is supported by iHeartCats Hero VIP Club members and qualifying purchases from the iHeartCats shop, which help fund food, supplies, and medical care for vulnerable cats.
