Chicken Nugget and Rumi Lead 2026 Pet Naming Trends
The latest pet-naming report released on October 20 shows that quirky, pop-culture inspired names are climbing the charts. For cats, the most popular name in the United States is Chicken Nugget, up 82% from last year, likely fueled by a viral meme. Traditional favorites still dominate overall rankings, with Milo the top male cat name and Luna the top female cat name.
Dog names follow a similar pattern. The top trending dog name in the U.S. is Rumi, up 71% from the previous year, a nod to the animated film KPop Demon Hunters. Charlie remains the most popular male dog name and Luna the leading female dog name.
Across borders, Canada’s trends mirror the U.S., but the fastest-rising cat name is Minou and the top dog name is Ernie. In the United Kingdom, Milo and Luna are the most popular for both cats and dogs, while Sunnie and Dustin saw dramatic percentage increases of 1,287% and 981% respectively.
The data confirm a long-standing pattern: pet parents often draw inspiration from entertainment, food, and popular culture when naming their animals.
