Alabama PAWS

Alabama Paws Animal Rescue & Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) public nonprofit animal rescue serving Marshall County, Alabama. Its distinctive mission pairs shelter animals facing euthanasia with seniors and other caregivers in need of companionship: rather than simply adopting animals out, Alabama Paws retains ownership of the pets long-term and covers pet-related expenses such as food, grooming, veterinary care, and medications, while also providing temporary boarding and visitation support for caregivers when needed. The organization also cares for animals it considers unadoptable in an on-site sanctuary, where supporters can sponsor a sanctuary dog for roughly $12 a day to help cover expenses like flea and heartworm prevention. Alabama Paws is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Because Alabama law generally places liability for an animal's actions on its owner or the person controlling it, the organization has been working to raise awareness of the need for new legislation, similar in spirit to the Pet and Women Safety (PAWS) Act, that would protect it, its caregivers, and its affiliates from legal liability tied to animals placed through its unique senior-pairing program.
