Cottondale, AL
West Alabama Animal Rescue (WAAR) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit all-breed animal rescue based in Cottondale, Alabama. Founded in 2003, the volunteer-run group rescues pets facing certain euthanasia at local shelters, along with abandoned or abused animals, many of whom come in with special needs. All animals are placed in foster homes before adoption, where most learn house-training, basic obedience, and socialization; pets are also spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and dewormed prior to going to their new homes. WAAR's adoption fee is $125, with $50 refunded once proof of spay or neuter is provided. Adopting requires filling out an application and signing a contract. Adoptable pets can be viewed on Petfinder.com, and prospective adopters are encouraged to reach out to arrange a time to meet a pet in person or to ask questions by email. WAAR relies entirely on donations, fundraisers, and foster homes to continue its work, with no paid staff.
