Founded in 2010, Pets for Patriots Inc is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to pairing U.S. military veterans and Gold Star families with companion dogs and cats. Operating nationally through a network of partner shelters and veterinarians, the organization focuses on placing adult, special needs, and long-term homeless shelter animals into loving military homes. In addition to facilitating adoptions, Pets for Patriots provides financial assistance, veterinary discounts, and retail gift cards to help veterans care for their adopted pets.
Minimum 190 days of military service, honorable discharge (if separated), residence within 40 driving miles of an approved partner shelter/rescue, pre-approval by Pets for Patriots prior to adoption, and selecting an eligible pet (cat or dog 2+ years old, special needs, homeless 6+ months, or dog 40+ lbs).
Veterans submit an online application (taking about 5 minutes), provide proof of service documents upon pre-qualification, and receive an official approval email with instructions to adopt an eligible dog or cat from a partner shelter.
