Founded over 25 years ago, Indigo Rescue is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foster-based network dedicated to providing specialized, life-saving intervention for dogs and cats whose unique needs make them difficult to place in traditional shelters. The organization operates through foster homes and also maintains Indigo Ranch in Vernonia, Oregon, which houses a boarding facility that funds rescue operations alongside a small farm animal sanctuary.
Adopters must live within 30 miles of Portland, and existing household pets must be spayed or neutered. Cats must stay indoors or have access only to a catio or cat-secure yard, and must not be declawed. Dogs generally require a securely fenced yard. Adopters must agree to the rescue's lifetime return policy.
Prospective adopters must submit an online adoption application to arrange a meeting with an animal in its foster home. Applications are evaluated based on the best fit for the animal rather than on a first-come, first-served basis, and staff or volunteers deliver each pet directly to the adopter's home.
