Summer’s Toughest Cat Rescues of 2026

The hardest cat rescues of the summer were not the usual phone call and carrier trips. Three stories stand out for their physical difficulty, dangerous locations, and repeated efforts.

Rocky’s Rescue

A volunteer named Holly from SCRATCH, Inc. found a barely-month-old kitten, Rocky, trapped under a concrete drainage wall in a drainpipe near the Hixson YMCA. Heavy rocks had fallen on top of him. Holly closed the pipe’s opening to keep the kitten from running into traffic, then worked from the far end, using kitten sounds on a phone to locate him. She lifted the rocks one at a time until Rocky was free. He weighed about a pound and was unharmed. Holly returned to the pipe several days later to check for other kittens, finding none. Rocky has since doubled his weight and is fostering with Holly until he can be neutered.

Willie Bee’s Rescue

On the Williamsburg Bridge, a passerby saw a cat, Willie Bee, perched on a narrow ledge high above a Manhattan street. The passerby called 911, 311, Animal Services, a traffic officer, and a nearby firehouse. The NYPD’s 7th Precinct, the FDNY, and Animal Care Centers of NYC coordinated the rescue. Willie Bee, a five-year-old, FIV-positive, neutered, and vaccinated cat, was eased into a carrier, shaken but unhurt, and taken to ACC NYC. He drinks water with a paw hooked over the rim of the bowl and holds it in various configurations. He remains at ACC NYC, awaiting a calm home.

Key takeaways

  • Rocky was rescued from a drainpipe by lifting rocks one at a time.
  • Holly closed the pipe’s opening to prevent traffic danger.
  • Willie Bee was found on a high bridge ledge and rescued by multiple agencies.
  • Both cats are healthy and awaiting permanent homes.
  • Repeated visits to the rescue sites were necessary to ensure no other animals were left behind.
