Haines Animal Rescue Kennel (HARK) was founded in 2001 by a group of local residents to promote the wellbeing of pets in the Haines, Alaska community. It is a federally recognized nonprofit governed by a nine-member volunteer board, with daily operations overseen by staff including an interim executive director, assistant shelter manager, and animal care assistant. HARK offers pet adoption, dog licensing, grooming, low-cost spay/neuter referrals, microchipping, and veterinarian information for the community, and works to find appropriate homes for animals in need while educating the public on responsible pet care. The adoption fee is $125, and local residents are required to visit the shelter in person to meet any potential match before adopting. HARK has received grant support over the years from the Rasmuson Foundation, the Chilkat Valley Community Foundation, and the ASPCA's Northern Tier Initiative, funding that has gone toward shelter improvements, the foster care program, community first aid training, and low-income spay/neuter assistance. The shelter is open Tuesday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m.
