Adopting

Fees, requirements & process

Requirements

No out-of-state adoptions are permitted. All adopted animals are required to be spayed or neutered per VA Code Section 3.1-796.126:3 at the adopter's expense. In addition, dogs and cats must be vaccinated against rabies by a licensed veterinarian by 4 months of age. Wise County reserves the right to refuse adoption of any animal considered a danger to the public or a public nuisance.

How it works

All animals available for adoption are released on a first-come, first-served basis, and animals will not be reserved. Prospective adopters are encouraged to stop by the shelter or call ahead at 276-679-6750 to ensure the animal they wish to visit is still available.
