It's a real, well-documented bacterial infection, though, and the bacteria behind it lives in a genuinely surprising number of healthy-looking cats without ever making the cat itself visibly sick.
What's actually behind it
Cat scratch disease (CSD) is caused by the bacterium Bartonella henselae. It doesn't typically make cats themselves obviously ill, which is exactly what makes it easy to overlook.
